Sunset Break

The following is a post I made on Facebook on July 25, 2022. I hope you find a way to embrace the beauty that shows up in the small moments. Miss you, Mama E.

**Sunset break**

When I was 4 years old, my best friend was an elderly widow who lived around the corner. She had the most beautiful garden and she was a fantastic listener. When she passed away a few years later, the person saying the closing prayer at her funeral asked God to send us a beautiful sunset to let us know she had made it home safely. It was the most gorgeous sunset I had ever seen.

In High School, my theater teacher would have us take sunset breaks. She would get texts about especially beautiful sunsets and would halt the entire rehearsal by shouting, “Sunset break!” We loved running outside to see the beauty before it was gone. She passed away the summer after I graduated, but I still try to run outside and watch a spectacular sunset when they show up.

Growing up, when my mom would see the beginnings of a beautiful sunset, she would often throw us in the car and drive us out to Utah Lake to watch. Seeing it set through the mountains and reflecting on the water is a core memory for me.

Tonight, I wrapped my arms around my momma and watched the sunset from her front yard. We had just finished shaving her head so she can start another treatment for her cancer.

All three of these women have taught me to grasp the simple beautiful moments as they arrive and to trust in God and his timing. He is there. He is listening. He is sending his love in ways only he can. Tonight it was through yet another beautiful sunset.
